MINOA, NY — Our quest for the best pizza in Upstate New York has led us to Minoa, just east of Syracuse, and to Trappers II Pizza & Pub.

This was the third stop in newyorkupstate.com’s Upstate pizza tour. Our team of judges have criss-crossed the state to try pizza from the six finalists chosen by our readers.

The judges will pick their choice for the top pizza. We’ve also invited readers to pick their favorite from among the finalists. We will announce both winners Wednesday, June 22.

In the meantime, here are 5 things you should know about Upstate Pizza Finalist No. 3.

Trappers II Pizza & Pub, 101 N. Main St., Minoa, NY 13116 | 315-656-7777

1. Watching sports is huge here. The multiple HD TVs, plenty of seating for large crowds of fans, and the memorabilia on the walls tells you this is a first-rate sports bar. It extends to the high school level: It’s a big hangout for East Syracuse-Minoa and Bishops Grimes supporters.

2. Playing sports is huge here. Is outdoor volleyball your thing? Trappers II has some fine facilities for league play (and bocce, too). Note the sign when you come in from the courts: “Help us stay neat. Knock your feet.”

3. The Trappers “family.” Local entrepreneur Greg Rinaldi helped found a family of pubs with sports themes, volleyball, pizza and beer. It began with the original Trappers in East Syracuse, followed by Trappers II, Stingers in Manlius and The Wildcat Pub in Camillus. Rinaldi is no longer with Trappers, but new owners or partners carry on the traditions. And the smiling dog with the red bandana is still on the Trappers logos.

4. The Garlic Knots mean business. Note: They do NOT skimp on the garlic in these knots.

5. Beyond pizza. There’s a full service bar with craft and domestic beers, and menu that ranges from calzones and burgers to salads and wraps.
